China wird die Vereinigten Staaten bis 2030 als weltweit größter Uranverbraucher durch den Anstieg ihrer Einfuhren für ihre wachsende Nuklearindustrie übertreffen, so der stellvertretende Leiter der Nationalen Energiebehörde des asiatischen Riesen Qian Zhimin, der heute von der Tageszeitung "China Daily" zitiert wurde.
Qian fügte hinzu, dass die Kernenergie bis 2020 zwischen 7 und 8 Prozent zur Stromerzeugung in Asien beitragen wird. Dieser Nachfrageanstieg dürfte den Uranpreis nicht verteufeln, so Qian, da China stets langfristige Pläne für die Beschaffung von Uran hatte und nicht am Markt für punktuelle Käufe teilnahm.
China hat bereits 11 Atomreaktoren in Betrieb, baut weitere 13 Reaktoren und wird, wie im letzten Jahr seine Atomenergie-Partnerschaft angekündigt hat, bis 2020 mehr als 60 bauen, die jeweils 400 Tonnen Uran benötigen werden, um mit dem Betrieb zu beginnen. Laut der Tageszeitung importierte China im vergangenen Jahr 17 136 Tonnen Uran und verdreifachte damit seine Einfuhren aus dem Jahr 2009. In den letzten fünf Jahren hat der asiatische Riese den Bau von Kernkraftwerken beschleunigt, um seine Abhängigkeit von Kohle zu verringern.
