Das Schiff Rainbow Warrior II von Greenpeace zieht sich nach 22 Jahren zurück, indem es die Meere beschützt, um ein Krankenhausschiff für die NGO Friendship von Bangladesch zu werden, hat die Umweltorganisation in einer Erklärung berichtet.

Bei einer heutigen Zeremonie in Singapur hat Greenpeace sein Eigentum an der NGO Friendship übertragen und das Protestschiff wurde unter dem Namen Rongdhonu (Iris-Arch in Bengali) neu getauft.

Von nun an wird das Schiff an der Küste Bangladeschs und im Golf von Bengala bleiben, indem es einigen der am stärksten gefährdeten Bevölkerungsgruppen der Welt, die wenig oder keinen Zugang zu grundlegenden sanitären Einrichtungen haben, eine primäre, sekundäre und dringende Gesundheitsversorgung gewährt.

Darüber hinaus wird das Rongdhonu auch als medizinisches Notboot in der Region dienen, wodurch Friendship medizinische Hilfe in jene Gebiete bringen kann, die bereits unter den Auswirkungen des Klimawandels leiden.

Mike Finchen, der Kapitän des Rainbow Warrior II., zitierte die Prophezeiung der Indianer Er glaubte, er habe den Namen des Schiffes inspiriert: "Es wird einen Tag kommen, an dem die Erde krank wird, und in dieser Zeit wird ein Stamm geboren, der sie heilen wird... und sie werden als die Krieger des Regenbogens bekannt sein."

"Auf diesem Schiff sind Menschen aus der ganzen Welt gereist, es ist eine Symbol der Hoffnung angesichts des Pessimismus," fügte er hinzu, "und ein Symbol der Aktion gegen Selbstzufriedenheit."

Nach der Übernahme des Rongdhonu plant das Schiff, von Singapur nach Bangladesch zu segeln, wo es voraussichtlich im September 2011 den Hafen von Chittagogong erreichen wird.

Greenpeace wird jedoch nicht lange ohne einen Rainbow Warrior bleiben, da der Bau des neuen Warrior, der dritte, der diesen Namen trägt, fast abgeschlossen ist; das Schiff wird sich der Greenpeace-Flotte im Oktober anschließen, an dem 40. Jahrestag der Umweltorganisation.

Der Rainbow Warrior II segelte 1989 zum ersten Mal mit Greenpeace und ersetzte das ursprüngliche Schiff, das 1985 von französischen Regierungsagenten bombardiert und gesunken wurde.

Seit über zwei Jahrzehnten leistete das Schiff den Opfern des Tsunami in Südostasien im Jahr 2004 humanitäre Hilfe, blockierte Atomtests und illegale Holzlieferungen aus den Primärwäldern und sprang in die Meere der ganzen Welt, um gegen Überfischung oder Waljagd zu protestieren.

Auf einer seiner letzten Reisen segelte er an der Küste von Fukushima, um Strahlungsproben durchzuführen. EFE
