Wissenschaftler des Vulkanischen Instituts der Kanarischen Inseln (Involcan) haben berichtet, dass die jüngsten Daten über die diffuse Emission von Kohlendioxid in die Atmosphäre durch das vulkanische Gebäude von El Hierro 332 Tonnen pro Tag, der Wert bezieht sich auf die Menge des CO2, die über die gesamte Fläche (278 km2 ) der Insel in die Atmosphäre abgegeben wird.

 

Dieser Wert ist sehr ähnlich dem geschätzten Durchschnittswert für das vulkanische System von El Hierro (345 Tonnen täglich) und niedriger als die 768 Tonnen täglich, die von Involcan am 4. April registriert wurden, als es nicht in der Lage war, diese Art von Studien aufgrund des Mangels an finanziellen Unterstützung für die post-eruptive Phase dieser Episode der magmatischen Reaktivierung unter der Insel fortzusetzen.

 

Die zeitliche Entwicklung dieses Registers spiegelt einen angeblichen Trend wider abwärts der diffusen Kohlendioxidemissionen (CO2) vom vergangenen 4. April bis zum 7. Juli, wobei die für El Hierro als normal geltenden Werte der diffusen CO2-Emissionen zwischen 142 auf 866 Tonnen täglich, mit einem Durchschnittswert von 345 Tonnen. Um diese Ergebnisse zu erzielen, haben die ITER-Wissenschaftler seit 1998 regelmäßige Kampagnen zur diffusen Emission von Kohlendioxid in El Hierro durchgeführt. Jede dieser Kampagnen beinhaltet die Durchführung von Hunderten von Maßnahmen zur diffusen CO2-Fluss auf der gesamten Inseloberfläche, um die räumlich-temporalen Schwankungen der diffusen Kohlendioxidemissionen in die Atmosphäre zu untersuchen.

 

Die durch diese Kampagnen generierten Informationen können nicht über permanente Instrumentennetze abgerufen werden. Weitere Gründe für das Interesse dieser Überwachungsarbeiten sind die Rolle der Gase als treibende Kraft der Vulkanausbrüche. Tatsächlich ist Kohlendioxid der zweite Hauptbestandteil der vulkanischen Gase nach Wasserdampf, und die geringe Biolöslichkeit von CO2 in silizitierten Schmelzen (Magma) fördert die Entweichen des Kohlendioxids mit größter Leichtigkeit aus tiefen vulkalen Systemen.

 

Diese wissenschaftlichen Kampagnen konnten dank der Makavol-Projekt "Stärkung der FuE-Fähigkeiten für die Verringerung des Vulkanrisikos in Makaronesien (MAC/3/C161)."
