
Die antarktische kontinentale Eiskappe entstand zum ersten Mal während der Oligocen - Ja. 33,6 Millionen Jahre, wie die Daten einer internationalen Expedition zeigen, die von der Andalusisches Institut für Erdwissenschaften (gemischtes Zentrum des Obersten Rates für wissenschaftliche Forschung und der Universität Granada). Der Fund, der auf Informationen in Eissedimenten in verschiedenen Tiefen basiert, erscheint heute in der Zeitschrift Wissenschaft.
Bevor sich das Eis auf dem antarktischen Kontinent befand, war die Erde ein warmer Ort des tropischen Klimas. In dieser Region war das Plankton sehr vielfältig, bis die Gletscher diese Bestände auf nur jene reduzierten, die im neuen Klima überleben konnten.
Die internationale Expedition Integrated Ocean Drilling Program hat diese Informationen dank der paläoklimmatischen Geschichte erhalten, die in den Sedimentschichten der antarktischen Tiefen bewahrt wird. Die Forscherin des Andalusischen Instituts für Wissenschaften der Karlotte Escutia, die die Expedition geleitet hat, erklärt: "Die Fossilaufzeichnung der Gemeinden von Dinoflagella-Organen spiegelt eine große Abnahme und Spezialisierung dieser Arten wider, die bei der Errichtung der Eiskappe und damit der Stationen, die durch die Bildung und das Verschwinden der Eisbanche gekennzeichnet sind, stattgefunden hat."
Der Ursprung der antarktischen Polarkappe markiert den Beginn der Funktionsweise ihrer Plankton-Gemeinschaften, die heute noch bestehen. Diese Eisschicht ist mit seiner Banquisa verbunden, die der eisige Teil ist, der verschwindet und je nach Saisonalität des Klimas wiederkehrt.
Gemäß dem Artikel bedeutet das Verschwinden dieser Banquisa, wenn der antarktische Sommer näher rückt, den Anstieg der Primärproduktion der endemischen Plantonengemeinden. Beim Schmelzen setzt das Eis die darin gesammelten Nährstoffe frei, die vom Plankton verwendet werden. Escutia weist darauf hin, dass "dieses Phänomen Einfluss auf die Dynamik der globalen Primärproduktion hat."
Seitdem das Eis zum ersten Mal den Antarktis-Kontinent erobert und die Spezialisierung seiner Dinoflagella-Gemeinschaften ausgelöst hat, haben sich diese Arten bis heute verändert und sich weiterentwickelt. Die Forscherin des Andalusischen Instituts für Erdwissenschaften ist jedoch der Ansicht, dass "die große Veränderung damals stattgefunden hat, als die Arten ihre Formen vereinfachten und gezwungen waren, sich an die neuen klimatischen Bedingungen anzupassen."
Die Sedimente aus der Eiszeit vor der Eiszeit enthielten Gemeinschaften mit sehr unterschiedlichen Dinoflagellaten mit Sternenmorphologien, bis das Eis vor 33,6 Millionen Jahren seine Vielfalt beschränkte und seine Tätigkeit der neuen Saisonalität des Klimas unterlag.
