Zyanobacterien gehören zu den primitivsten Lebewesen, mit mehr als 3,5 Milliarden Jahre alt.

 

Diese aquatischen Mikroorganismen trugen zur Sauerstoffversorgung der Atmosphäre bei, doch jetzt wachsen ihre Populationen ständig an. Die Erderwärmung scheint hinter diesem Anstieg zu stehen, ebenso wie hinter den Giftstoffen, die einige davon erzeugen.

 

"Cyanobakterien sind heiße Wasserliebhaber, so dass ein Temperaturanstieg im Laufe dieses Jahrhunderts ihr Wachstum begünstigen kann, insbesondere bei den zytotoxischen Sorten, die sogar noch mehr Giftstoffe erzeugen und schädlicher werden könnten," so Rehab El-Shehawy, Forscherin bei IMDEA Wasser und Mitautorin einer Studie, die in der Zeitschrift Water Research veröffentlicht wurde. Ihr Team analysiert, wie diese Toxine hergestellt und verwendet werden, um auf die Zunahme von Cyanobakterien vorbereitet zu sein.

 

Die Entdeckungen dieser Mikroorganismen in Seen, Staudämmen und Flüssen aus der ganzen Welt sowie in Mündungen und Meeren, wie der Ostsee, ist ein immer häufigeres Phänomen. Nach Ansicht der Experten stellt dies ein wirtschaftliches Problem dar - zum Beispiel in der Schifffahrt oder im Tourismus - und ein Umweltproblem.

 

In Spanien hat sich die Beziehung zwischen den Verbreitungen toxischer Cyanobakterien in den Sümpfen von Doñana mit wild lebenden Tieren in diesem natürlichen Raum bestätigt, obwohl die Auswirkungen auf die menschliche Gesundheit am meisten Besorgnis erregen.

 

 

Gefahr für die menschliche Gesundheit

 

"Diese Giftstoffe können Leber und andere Organe (Hepotoxine), das Nervensystem (Neurotoxine), verschiedene Zellen (Chytoxine) sowie Augen und Schleimhäuten sowie Dermatitis und Allergien beeinflussen," erklärt Francisca F. del Campo, eine andere Autorin und Forscherin an der Autonomen Universität Madrid.

 

Die Wissenschaftler fordern von den Behörden und der allgemeinen Bevölkerung mehr Aufmerksamkeit für dieses ungekannte Gesundheits- und Umweltproblem, das nicht genügend Interesse hat.

 

Es ist vermutet, dass hinter einigen gastrointestinalen Störungen sind Zytotoxine
