Vegetationsverbrennungen sind ein globales Phänomen, das in sehr unterschiedlichen Ökosystemen auftritt: tropische, gemäßigte und boreale Ökosysteme. Sie sind in den tropischen Wäldern Brasiliens und Indonesiens, in den gemäßigten USA und Europa, in den nördlichen Gebieten von Sibirien, China und Kanada, in den tropischem Savannen Afrikas und in den landwirtschaftlichen Flächen der Vereinigten Staaten und Europas üblich.

 

Die verschiedenen Arten von Tätigkeiten im Zusammenhang mit dem Feuer erzeugen eine breite Palette von ökologischen, atmosphärischen und klimatischen Auswirkungen, die stark von der Ausbreitung und Intensität der verbrannten Gebiete abhängen. Daher ist es von entscheidender Bedeutung, dass detaillierte Informationen über Standort, Umfang und Intensität sowohl auf globaler als auch auf lokaler Ebene vorliegen, um die wirtschaftlichen Verluste und ökologischen Auswirkungen zu bewerten, die Veränderungen in den Nutzungs- und Bodenbelägen zu überwachen, die Auswirkungen der verbrannten Biomasse auf die Luft und die Umwelt zu modellieren und die kurz- und langfristigen Folgen nach dem Brand zu schätzen.

 

Der große Nachteil in der Thematik der verbrannten Bereiche besteht darin, dass ein Algorithmus für den verbrannten Bereich erstellt wird, der die Verarbeitung mehrerer Szenen auf autonomer Basis ermöglicht, damit der riesige freie Datensatz genutzt werden kann. Genau auf diesem Gebiet arbeitet Aitor Basarrika neben Karmele Artano, Aitziber Elgezabal, Amaia Mesenza, Ma Pilar Martinez, Leyre Torre und Maite Alvarado.

 

"Mit der neuen Politik der kostenlosen Verteilung von Landsat-Daten im Jahr 2008," erklärt Basarrika, "wurde eine neue Ära der Fernerkundung eröffnet, die auf die Kartierung der zu niedrigen Kosten verbrannten Gebiete ausgerichtet war. Die Beschaffung der vom Feuer betroffenen Gebiete in kurzer Zeit seit dem Aussterben ist entscheidend für die Bewertung der wirtschaftlichen und ökologischen Verluste und die Vorlage geeigneter Pläne zur Wiederherstellung der Vegetation.
