
Obwohl es wie eine Fiktion klingt, ein Team der Universität Exeter, in Devon (Vereinigtes Königreich), mit Unterstützung von Shell, hat eine Methode entwickelt, um einige Bakterien Diesel auf Nachfrage erzeugen.
Obwohl die Technologie noch vor vielen großen Herausforderungen für ihre mögliche Vermarktung steht, wird Diesel von speziellen Bakterienstämmen produziert E. coli, es fast identisch mit konventionellem Dieselkraftstoff.
Dies bedeutet z.B., dass muss nicht mit Erdölerzeugnissen gemischt werden, wie es häufig für Biodiesel aus Pflanzenölen erforderlich ist. Es bedeutet auch, dass Diesel in den heutigen elektrischen Generatoren verwendet werden kann, ohne Änderungen am Motor selbst oder in den Lagertanks.
Eine neue Konzeption für Diesel?
El Professor John Love, Abteilung für Biowissenschaften der Universität Exeter, sagte er: "Die Produktion kommerzieller Biokraftstoffe, die verwendet werden können, ohne die Fahrzeuge zu ändern, war das Ziel dieses Projekts von Anfang an. Der Ersatz von konventionellem Diesel mit neutralem CO2-Biokraftstoff in kommerziellen Mengen wäre ein großer Schritt in Richtung auf die Erreichung unseres Ziels, die Treibhausgasemissionen bis 2050 um 80% zu senken. Die weltweite Nachfrage nach Energie steigt und ein Brennstoff, der sowohl von Schwankungen der Ölpreise unabhängig ist und die politische Instabilität ist eine zunehmend anziehende Perspektivea"
Die Bakterien E. coli verwandelt natürlich Zucker in Fette, um ihre Zellmembranen zu bauen. Ölmoleküle, synthetischer Brennstoff, können durch die Nutzung dieses Prozesses der Produktion von natürlichem Öl erzeugt werden.
