Silvia Larumbe Abuin hat in seiner Dissertation eine Art von Nanostrukturen entwickelt, die den Prozess der Dekontaminierung des Wassers erleichtern. Die Nanostrukturen (mikroskopische Partikel zwischen 1 und 100 Nanometern) werden durch Titanoxid, dem Stickstoff zugesetzt wurde. Dies ermöglicht es dem Sonnenlicht statt ultravioletter Strahlung, den Prozess der chemischen Reaktion und der Zerstörung von Schadstoffen einzuleiten. Darüber hinaus können sie dank des magnetischen Kerns der Partikel nach der Verarbeitung wiederhergestellt und wieder verwendet werden.

Die These von Silvia Larumbe "Synthese, Charakterisierung und Anwendungen von Nanostrukturen auf der Grundlage von Übergangsmetalloxiden" wurde von Professor Cristina Gómez Polo vom Institut für Physik der Universität von Navarra, und hat die höchste Bewertung erhalten, Ausgezeichnet cum laude.

Die Forschung beruht auf dem so genannten Phänomen Fotokatalyse: Wenn das Licht eine Substanz beeinflusst, die als Katalysator wirkt, erhöht sich die Geschwindigkeit der chemischen Reaktion. In diesem Fall wird durch Licht Titanoxid aktiviert und verschiedene oxidierende Radikale gebildet, die organische Schadstoffe des Wassers zerstören, wie Farbstoffe, Lösungsmittel, Detergenzien usw. Wie die Autorin erklärt, "Es handelt sich um ein nachhaltiges System, das als Alternative zu verschiedenen Behandlungen verwendet werden könnte, die traditionell zur Abwasserreinigung und insbesondere zur Beseitigung bestimmter organischer Schadstoffe verwendet werden.”.

Zu den Vorteilen dieser Entwicklung gehört die Möglichkeit, Sonnenlicht anstelle von UV-Licht zu verwenden. "Durch den Zusatz von Stickstoff zur Partikelbeschichtung erreichen wir, dass der Prozessstarter Sonnenlicht und nicht UV-Strahlung ist, was eine leichter zugängliche, kostengünstigere und weniger riskante Alternative darstellt.”.

Die Verwendung von Strukturen von Nanogröße verbessert auch die photokatalytische Kapazität, da die Oberfläche des Photokatalalysators größer ist. Ein weiterer Vorteil ist die Wiederverwendung des Katalysatorelements, da Nanostrukturen, die aus einem Magnetkern bestehen, durch Anwendung eines externen Magnetfelds wiederhergestellt werden können.
