
Nach einer Studie der Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona und Universität Guelph (Kanada) verwendet jeder Sportler der olympischen Schießspezialitäten tausend Patronen pro Woche und Verstreuung von etwa 1,3 Tonnen Blei pro Jahr in der Umwelt mit schädlichen Auswirkungen auf die Fauna und die Landwirtschaft.
In dem in der Zeitschrift veröffentlichten Artikel AMBIODie Autoren fordern die Ersetzung von Bleimunition durch nichttoxische und ähnliche technische Merkmale.
Der Professor für Toxikologie der UAB, Raimon Guitart, und der emeritierte Professor an der Universität Guelph in Kanada, Vernon Thomas, haben die Umweltauswirkungen der Verwendung von Bleimunition in der Schießsport Praxis im Detail analysiert, in einem Forschungsartikel veröffentlicht in der AMBIO Review. Obwohl die Zahl der Olympiasportler in dieser Spezialität gering ist und die olympische Wettkämpfe wieder aufgenommen und die abgefeuerte Munition recycelt werden, gibt es auf der ganzen Welt zahlreiche Attentate, und die Praktiken sind unter Bedingungen gegeben, die die Wiederherstellung der Munition nach dem Schuss praktisch unmöglich machen.
Forscher zeigen, wie die Ausbildung dieser Athleten mit dem Einsatz von etwa tausend Patronen pro Person pro Woche und einer jährlichen Zerstreuung von etwa 1,3 Tonnen Blei in der Umwelt verbunden ist. Dieses Metall birgt die Gefahr einer Kontamination der Kulturen und einer Vergiftung der Tiere, insbesondere der Vögel, die Munition mit kleinen Steinen verwechseln und verschlucken.
Obwohl es seit 10 Jahren nicht-toxische, aus Stahl hergestellte alternative Sportmunition gibt, übertreibt das Internationale Olympische Komitee die Regelung über die Art der Munition dem Internationalen Verband für Schießsport (ISSF), der nur Bleimunition für offizielle Wettbewerbe akzeptiert. In einigen Ländern wie Dänemark, Schweden und den Niederlanden, in denen die Verwendung von Bleimunition verboten ist, sollten Ausnahmen für die olympischen Schießübungen und -wettkämpfe ihrer Sportler gemacht werden.
Die Studie zeigt, daß Blei je nach Bodentyp gelöst, im Grundwasser zerstreut und von der Vegetation aufgenommen werden kann. In der Tschechischen Republik, wo Blei in Getreide übergegangen ist, wurden Fälle von bleiverseuchten landwirtschaftlichen Flächen in Finnland beschrieben, wo die Verschmutzung von Blaubeerfeldern beschrieben wurde und in Neuseeland.
Neben Blei wird in der Studie auch festgestellt, dass die mit diesem Metall hergestellte Munition Arsen und Antimon enthält, zwei giftige Metalle, die in die Mitte freigesetzt werden, wenn die Munition abgebaut wird und die auch dazu beitragen, das Umweltrisiko dieser Praxis zu erhöhen.
Nach Ansicht der Autoren könnte das Problem der Verwendung von Blei in Munition bis 2020 gelöst werden, wobei neue Regulierungsmaßnahmen und die schrittweise Ersetzung von giftiger Munition durch Stahlmunition eingeführt werden könnten.
