Europäische Wissenschaftler wenden innovative Methoden zur Behandlung von Epilepsie, eine verheerende neurologische Erkrankung, die 50 Millionen Menschen auf der ganzen Welt 6 Millionen Europäer. Insbesondere untersuchen sie die Verwendung von Viren zur Infektion von Neuronen und die anschließende Zelltransplantation im Gehirn.

 

El Epixchange-Projekt (Innovative Gentherapeutika zur Behandlung von Epilepsie) ist einer der Pioniere in dieser alternativen Behandlung. Die italienischen, dänischen und französischen Wissenschaftler aus Hochschulen und kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) arbeiten an den Arbeiten an diesem Thema im Rahmen des Programms für Forschung und technologische Entwicklung (FTE) zusammen. Universität Lund (Schweden).

Ihr Budget, das ungefähr eine Million Euro beträgt, wurde von der Europäischen Union bereitgestellt.

 

Im Rahmen der Gruppe der Krampfanfälle wird Epilepsie in der Regel einmal diagnostiziert, wenn der Patient zwei Krampfanfälle hatte, die weder durch eine Krankheit noch durch eine extreme Hypoglykämie verursacht wurden. Krampfanfälle haben ihren Ursprung in Übermäßige elektrische Entladungen, plötzlich und normalerweise kurz in einer Gruppe von Neuronen. Eine Ansteckung bedeutet nicht unbedingt Epilepsie, denn bis zu 10 Prozent der Weltbevölkerung leiden irgendwann in ihrem Leben unter einer. Epilepsie ist eine der seit langem anerkannten Störungen und die Behandlung ist in der Regel in etwa 70 Prozent der Fälle positiv.

 

 

Epixchange-Projekt

 

Ein erheblicher Teil der Kosten für neurologische Erkrankungen wird der Epilepsie zugeschrieben. In Schweden, dem Land, in dem Epixchange geplant wurde, gibt es 60.000 Betroffene. 30 bis 40 Prozent von ihnen sind gegen pharmakologische Therapien resistent, die hauptsächlich Symptome behandeln und häufig Nebenwirkungen verursachen. Epixchange wurde zur Untersuchung innovativer Gentherapien gegen Epilepsie entwickelt..

 

Er untersucht die Entwicklung von menschlichen, eingekapselten Zelllinien, die den Neurotransmitter Alanin und das Neuropeptid Y (NPY) und seine Auswirkungen auf epileptische Anfälle erzeugen. Um dies zu erreichen, verwenden sie virale Vektoren, die Neuropeptide und andere Proteine (neurotrope Faktoren) in das Gehirn einbauen können, um Krampfanfälle zu verhindern. Diese innovativen Methoden werden als Grundlage für die Entwicklung alternativer Therapietechniken dienen.

 

Epilepsie macht 0,5 Prozent der weltweiten Morbiditätsbelastung aus, ein zeitlich befristetes Maß, das durch die vorzeitige Mortalität und die Dauer eines Lebens in einem Zustand, der nicht vollständig gesund ist, verlorene Lebensjahre kombiniert. Epilepsie hat zahlreiche wirtschaftliche Auswirkungen in Form von Gesundheitsversorgung, vorzeitigem Tod und Verlust der Arbeitsproduktivität.

 

Obwohl ihre sozialen Auswirkungen in jedem Land unterschiedlich sind, können Diskriminierung und soziale Stigmatisierung, die Epilepsie umgibt, weltweit problematischer sein als Krampfanfälle selbst. Vorurteile gegen die Betroffenen sind weit verbreitet. Im Vereinigten Königreich beispielsweise war bis 1970 ein Gesetz in Kraft, das die Epileptiker daran hinderte, zu heiraten. In den 70er Jahren war es immer noch legal, Restaurants, Theater und Freizeitzentren für Menschen mit Epilepsie zu verweigern. Das Stigma, das mit dieser Erkrankung verbunden war, veranlaßte viele Betroffenen, nicht auf die Symptome zu kommen, weil sie Angst hatten, mit der Krankheit in Verbindung zu stehen.

 

Die Situation ändert sich jedoch. Eine Methode, die sich auf die in viralen Vektoren die positive Gene in das Gehirn einbauen. In den Vereinigten Staaten wurden mehrere klinische Studien mit dieser Methode zur Behandlung der Parkinson-Krankheit durchgeführt. Laut Professor Merab Kokaia von der Universität Lund besteht der Projektvorschlag in der Durchführung solcher klinischen Studien an Lund-Patienten mit schwerer Epilepsie, die nicht auf eine pharmakologische Behandlung ansprechen.
