Vor 50 Jahren sagte der Physiker Rolf Landauer von IBM voraus, dass Energie freigesetzt wird, wenn Informationen gelöscht werden, wie wir es normalerweise auf einem Computer tun. Nun haben europäische Forscher dies durch ein Experiment mit einem Bit aus Erinnerung bestätigt, wie sie in der Zeitschrift "Nature" veröffentlicht werden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen die enge Beziehung zwischen der Informationstheorie und der Thermodynamik.

 

"Wenn Sie die Informationen, die ein Gerät speichert, wie die Festplatte eines Computers, löschen, wird Wärme freigesetzt und das Gerät wird erhitzt," erklärt SINC Eric Lutz, Forscher an der Universität Augsburg (Deutschland) und Mitautor einer Studie, in der das Landauer-Prinzip experimentell validiert wird.

 

Dieses Prinzip, das 1961 von dem Physiker Rolf Landauer von IBM eingeführt wurde, besagt, dass jede logischerweise irreversible Umwandlung, wie das Unterdrücken eines Bit-Informationen, Wärme freisetzt. "Landauer-Grenzwert" ist die Mindestwärmemenge, die erzeugt werden kann, wenn ein Bit an Informationen entfernt wird.

 

Die neue Studie, die diese Woche in Nature veröffentlicht wird, zeigt durch ein Experiment, dass die abgesonderte Hitze immer höher ist als die Grenze von Landauer. Die Forscher haben dies durch die Aufnahme eines Glasteilchens in eine optische Falle (ein modulierbares Doppellochpotenzial) überprüft, um ein generisches Modell eines Bit Speichers mit zwei Zuständen zu erstellen: 0 und 1.

 

"Wir haben die Wärme gemessen, die während des Löschens dieses Informationsbits auftritt, und die Daten zeigen, dass die abgesonderte Wärme an die Grenze von Landauer heranreichen konnte, dass sie aber nie überschritten wurde," betont Lutz.

 

1 Bit = 3x10-21 Joule

 

Bisher war es sehr schwierig, das Prinzip des IBM-Physikers durch die Schwierigkeit zu validieren, Experimente mit nur einem Teilchen durchzuführen und die geringe Wärmeabscheidung zu messen. Tatsächlich hat sich die Energie, die durch das Löschen eines Bit-Informationen erzeugt wird, bei Raumtemperatur nur etwa 3x10-21 Joule ergeben.

 

Die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen auch die "intime Verbindung" zwischen der Informationstheorie und der Thermodynamik, zwei Bereichen, die Landauer in seinen Vorschlägen bereits in Verbindung gebracht hat.

 

Lutz erinnert daran, dass die Wärmeerzeugung "eines der Hauptprobleme ist, die die Miniaturisierung von Computern erschweren." Die Energieverschwendung, die die heutigen Siliziumkreise bei einer logischen Operation durchführen, liegt in der Größenordnung von 1.000 mal mehr als die Grenze von Landauer, aber die Wissenschaftler hoffen, dieses Ziel in den nächsten 20 bis 30 Jahren zu erreichen.
