Eine Studie der Universität Edinburgh in Großbritannien ergab, daß Milch, die jährlich nicht verbraucht wird, ausgelassen wird und aufgrund der schädlichen Emissionen, die sie erzeugt, eine erhebliche Auswirkung auf die Umwelt hat.

 

Die Wissenschaftler haben erklärt, daß 360.000 Tonnen Milch, die Großbritannien jedes Jahr vergeudet, erzeugt eine Menge Gasemissionen, die 100.000 Tonnen CO2. Diese Studie zeigt, daß diese Menge im Verhältnis zu den von den 20.000 Autos.

 

Die Forschung identifiziert Gewohnheiten, mit denen die Verbraucher helfen können, die Gasemissionen zu verringern, wie etwa die Menge der Lebensmittel, die sie kaufen, servieren und dann verschwenden. Er schlägt auch vor, dass die Lebensmittelindustrie die Emissionen durch eine gute Palette von Düngemitteln reduzieren kann.

 

 

Sonstige Lebensmittel

 

Im Rahmen der Studie legen die Forscher auch nahe, dass eine Halbierung der Menge an Hähnchen, die in England gegessen wird, eine Verringerung des Treibhauseffekts proportional dazu wäre, 10.000 Autos von den Straßen zu nehmen.

 

Die Prognose ist, dass die Nachfrage nach Nahrungsmitteln, insbesondere Fleisch, vor den nächsten Jahrzehnten steigen könnte, da die Weltbevölkerung weiter wächst und in Länder auswandert, in denen es Tradition ist, sie zu konsumieren.

 

 

Schlußfolgerungen

 

Eine der wichtigsten Schlussfolgerungen des Studienleiters Dr. David Reay von der Universität Edinburgh ist, dass "weniger Fleisch zu essen und weniger Lebensmittel zu verschwenden ein wesentlicher Beitrag zur Verringerung der Treibhausgasemissionen sein kann."

 

In der Studie wurde auch Stickstoffmonoxid aus der Landwirtschaft untersucht, das für einen nicht unerheblichen Anteil an Treibhausgasemissionen verantwortlich ist.

 

Die Forscher kamen zu diesen Schlussfolgerungen, indem sie die Daten für die gesamte landwirtschaftliche Erzeugung von Treibhausgasen sowie den Verzehr von Nahrungsmitteln in verschiedenen Regionen der Welt analysierten.
