Wissenschaftler aus spanischen Institutionen haben es geschafft, das Licht auf Nanometrische Skala in Grammen, wie sie diese Woche in der Zeitschrift Nature veröffentlicht werden. Der Fortschritt bestätigt die theoretischen Vorhersagen und die potenziellen Eigenschaften dieser Schicht von Kohlenstoffatomen, um optische Informationen zu verarbeiten.

 

Spanische Forschungsteams haben es geschafft, zum ersten Mal nanometrisches Licht in Grafen in einer Schicht von Kohlenstoffatomen mit einer Dicke von nur einem Atom zu visualisieren. Diese Visualisierung beweist, was theoretische Physiker schon lange vorhergesagt hatten: dass es möglich ist, Licht sehr effizient zu fangen und zu manipulieren, indem man Grafen als neue Plattform nutzt, um optische Informationen und ultraempfindliche Erkennung zu verarbeiten.

 

Die Studie, die diese Woche von der Zeitschrift Nature veröffentlicht wird, wurde dank der Synergien zwischen dem Institut für Chemie-Physik Rocalcalano (IQFR-CSIC) in Madrid, dem Institut für Fotonikwissenschaften (ICFO) in Barcelona und NanoGUNE in San Sebastián ermöglicht.

 

Bis jetzt waren optische Eigenschaften von Grafen vorausgesagt worden, wenn das Licht an die sogenannten angeschlossen wird 'Plasones'(Wellennarben des "Meeres" von Leitungselektronen im Grafen). Es gab jedoch keine direkten experimentellen Beweise für diese Plasmone. Der Grund dafür ist, dass seine Wellenlänge, die 'Grafen-Plasmagröße', zwischen 10 und 100mal jünger Das bedeutet, dass wir uns auf herkömmliche optische Mikroskope konzentrieren können.

 

Mit der neuen Arbeit zeigen Forscher die ersten experimentellen Bilder von Plasmonen in diesem Material. Dazu haben sie ein 'nahes Feldmikroskop' benutzt, bei dem eine scharfe Spitze einen Lichtstrahl umwandelt, mit dem er in einen Lichtherd von der Nanogröße strahlt, um den Moment (eintauchen) zu liefern, der für die Erstellung dieser Lichtstrahlen erforderlich ist.

 

Gleichzeitig ist die Spitze empfindlich auf das Vorhandensein dieser Schwingen. Rainer Hillenbrand, Leiter der Gruppe nanoGUNEEr sagt: "Glauben ist zu sehen! Unsere nahegelegenen optischen Feldbilder beweisen definitiv die Existenz lokalisierter und sich bewegender Plasmone in Grafen und ermöglichen eine direkte Messung ihrer dramatischen Wellenlängenreduktion."

 

Diese Plasmone können für die elektrische Steuerung von Licht verwendet werden, ähnlich dem, was traditionell mit Elektronen in einem Transistor erreicht wird. Diese Anwendungen, die bisher mit den Plasmen in anderen Materialien nicht möglich waren, machen effiziente, nanometrische optische Kommutatoren lebensfähig, die es ermöglichen, Berechnungen durch Licht anstelle von Elektrizität durchzuführen.

 

 

Lösung technischer Probleme

 

"Mit unserer Arbeit haben wir gezeigt, dass Grafen eine ausgezeichnete Option ist, um wichtige technologische Probleme im Zusammenhang mit der Lichtmodulierung bei der Geschwindigkeit der aktuellen Mikrochips zu lösen," sagt Javier Garcia de Abo, Leiter der IQFR-CSIC-Gruppe.

 

Darüber hinaus könnte diese Fähigkeit, Licht in außergewöhnlich kleinen Volumen zu fangen, eine neue Generation von Nanosensoren mit Anwendungen in verschiedenen Bereichen wie Medizin, Biodetektion, Solarzellen und Lichtsensoren sowie Quanteninformationsprozessoren erhellen.

 

Dieses Ergebnis öffnet buchstäblich ein neues Forschungsgebiet und bietet einen praktikablen Weg, um Licht ultra-schnell zu konfigurieren, was bisher nicht möglich war. Frank Koppends, Leiter der ICFO-Gruppe, fasst es folgendermaßen zusammen: "Grafen ist ein einzigartiges und neuartiges Material für Plasmone, eine wahre Brücke zwischen den Feldern der Nanoelektronik und der Nanooptik."
