Die amerikanische Agentur für Spionage über Satellit - die National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) - schenkte der NASA zwei Teleskope, die ihre Experten als das Beste in Bezug auf die Optik des HELIOS bezeichnete. Die Raumfahrtbehörde will nach einem Jahr, nachdem sie sich umgedreht hat, einen von ihnen für ihre vorrangige Mission im nächsten Jahrzehnt nutzen: Studie der dunklen Energie.

 

Die beiden Teleskope haben die Erde noch nie verlassen. Sie warten auf ein Ziel in Rochester, New York. Eines davon könnte nie verwendet werden, weil die NASA nicht über ausreichende Mittel verfügt. Wie die Zeitung "Washington Post Houten" und die Zeitung "New York Times Houten " berichten, sind Geschenke zwar wichtig, aber nicht genug, um eine neue Mission zu garantieren oder sogar zu rechtfertigen.

 

 

Technische Merkmale

 

Beide Teleskope haben eine Linse 2,4 Meter Durchmesser, wie die der Hubble. Dennoch ist die Brennweite kleiner, so dass sie ein größeres Sichtfeld registrieren.

 

Ein NASA-Offizier sagt, wenn der Hubble auf die Erde zielt, würde er in der Lage sein, eine zehn Cent-Münze am höchsten in Washington D.C. zu erfassen.

 

Diese neuen Teleskope verfügen über ein viel fortgeschritteneres optisches Design und bieten mehr Qualität, obwohl sie alles andere nicht haben: einem Sensor, der optische Bilder erfasst, einem Satelliten, ein konkretes wissenschaftliches Ziel und ein Forschungsteam bereit, mit ihm zu arbeiten.
