Die Anlage, die in den Jahren 2013 bis 2015 in Betrieb sein wird, verfügt über 10 Megawatt Leistung (MW), die ausreichend ist, um die gesamte Insel Islay an der Westküste Schottlands mit Strom zu versorgen.
10 Turbinen zur Nutzung der Meeresströmungen
Das Projekt besteht aus der Installation von zehn Turbinen des Modells Hammerfest Strom HS1000. Die Turbine ähnelt einer Bodenwindkraftanlage, befindet sich aber auf dem Meeresboden und wird somit keine Beschränkung der Schifffahrt bedeuten. Darüber hinaus kann die spanische Gesellschaft die Kraft der Ströme in einer Tiefe von 60 bis 200 Metern nutzen.
Iberdrola hat sechs Jahre damit verbracht, dieses Hammerfest Strom HS1000 Modell in Norwegen zu entwickeln, zusammen mit der Gruppe, die Turbinen entwickelt und an der die spanische Elektrizität beteiligt ist. Dieses System ist das weltweit fortschrittlichste in Turbinen für Stromenergie.
Das Projekt Iberdrola wird eine entscheidende Rolle bei der großflächigen Verbreitung der Energie aus den Strömen spielen. Sie wird durch eine Umweltverträglichkeitsstudie ergänzt.
