Das niederländische Reifenunternehmen Apollo Vredestein hat die ersten Reifen hergestellt Prototypen von Naturlatexreifen aus den Pflanzen von Guayule und russischem Löwenzahn.

Prototypen, die das Projekt EU-PEARLS (Produktion und Nutzung alternativer Quellen für Kautschuk und Latex in der EU) sind, werden getestet, bevor grünes Licht für ihre Produktion gegeben wird. Nach Ansicht der Forscher könnten diese Reifen auf dem Weltmarkt eine bedeutende Nische finden und Europa dabei helfen, mit asiatischen Gummiherstellern zu konkurrieren.

 

EU-PEARLS erhielt Mittel in Höhe von fast 5,9 Mio. EUR im Rahmen des Themas Nahrungsmittel, Landwirtschaft und Fischerei sowie der Biotechnologie des Siebten Rahmenprogramms der EU (7RP).

 

 

EU-PEARL-Projekt

 

EU-PEARLS hat sich mit der Erforschung möglicher alternativer Quellen für Latex und Kautschuk befasst, um Europa weniger von asiatischen Produkten abhängig zu machen und um die in Europa niedergelassenen Latexhersteller zu fördern. Das Unternehmen, das mit dem Projekt NEIKER-Tecnalia (Spanien) assoziiert ist, analysierte den Genotyp des Guayule (Parthenium argentatum) und des russischen Löwenzahns (Taraxacum koksaghyz) und untersuchte seine mögliche Funktion als Ersatz für importiertes natürliches Latex und seine mögliche Einführung in Europa. Nach Ansicht der Wissenschaftler könnte Guayule im Mittelmeer angebaut werden, während der russische Löwenzahn in Ost- und Nordeuropa besser wachsen würde.

 

Nach Angaben von Experten gibt es verschiedene Arten von Naturlatex, die Schlüssel für die Gewinnung von Naturkautschuk sind. Letzteres ist ein Rohstoff, der in der Herstellung von Reifen, Schuhen, Klebstoffen, chirurgischen Handschuhen und Kondomen verwendet wird. Derzeit wird das gesamte in Europa verwendete Latex eingeführt, wobei es sich um ein Derivat aus dem Gummibaum (Hevea brasiliensis) handelt. Die weltweit größten Hersteller von Latex sind Indonesien, Malaysia und Thailand.

 

Bislang wurden die wissenschaftlichen Bemühungen um die Suche nach einem Ersatz für Naturkautschuk mit verschiedenen Hindernissen konfrontiert, doch dank dem EU-PEARLS-Projekt ist es bereits gelungen, eine Alternative zu finden, die es ermöglichen wird, gegen einen koordinierten Anstieg der Preise für diesen Rohstoff zu schützen. Und jetzt gibt es dank des EU-PEARLS-Projekts eine solche Alternative.

 

Sowohl Guayule als auch der russische Löwenzahn sind solide Alternativen. In Spanien wurde bereits begonnen, die erste Biomasse im großen Maßstab erzeugen. Es muss klargestellt werden, dass die Entfernung von russischem Löwenzahn einfacher zu sein scheint. Das für das Projekt zuständige Konsortium hat die Entwicklung und das Wachstum dieser Anlage optimiert, um den für die Gewinnung verfügbaren natürlichen Kautschukgehalt zu erhöhen.

 

Eine Lösung ist wichtig, da Hevea brasiliensis außer der Tatsache, dass Europa nur dieses Material importieren kann, mit mehreren Bedrohungen in Form von Schädlingen und Krankheiten konfrontiert ist. Außerdem erfordert der Anbau sehr spezifische Klimabedingungen, die hauptsächlich in tropischen Gebieten Asiens und Südamerikas auftreten. Die Forscher weisen auch darauf hin, daß der Kautschuk aus diesem Baum die Gefahr einer Latexallergie birgt, was nicht bei Latex aus Guayule und russischem Löwenzahn der Fall ist.

 

Die Partner von EU-PEARLS stammen aus der Tschechischen Republik, Frankreich, Deutschland, Kasachstan, den Niederlanden, Spanien, der Schweiz und den Vereinigten Staaten.
