
Die Energie, die kleine Systeme verlieren, wie z.B. Nanogeräte, kann entscheidend sein, damit diese Systeme optimal funktionieren. Nach den Grundsätzen der Thermodynamik zeigt die Anwendung der Theorie der Stabilität und der klassischen statistischen Mechanik auf die Beschreibung kleiner Systeme unter externen Bedingungen, die sie destabilisieren, eine konstante Wärmeproduktion, wenn das System zwischen zwei strukturellen Konfigurationen oder thermodynamischen Phasen schwankt.
Eine Studie in der Zeitschrift Physical Review E, unterschrieben von Augustinus Pérez, Institut für Grundphysik der Universität Barcelona, Ivan Santamaria, des Nationale Autonome Universität von Mexiko, analysiert die Auswirkungen der endlichen Form eines Systems auf sein thermodynamisches Verhalten.
Die Forschungsergebnisse sind von großem Interesse, da sie die Gültigkeit der Energieproduktions- und -umwandlungsdynamik in Nanoeinrichtungen stützen. In jüngster Zeit wurden mögliche Anwendungen in Nanogeneratoren, pyroelektrischen Systemen und elektrischen Speichersystemen, wie z. B. Hack-Batterien, beschrieben, so Augustinus Pérez.
Wenn ein makroskopisches System destabilisierenden Bedingungen unterliegt, wird es in zwei oder mehr Phasen getrennt, die im Gleichgewicht nebeneinander existieren können. Dies erzeugt Schnittstellen und schließlich entstehen neue thermodynamische Systeme.
Wenn das System jedoch endlich und klein genug ist, wie es bei Nanogeräten der Fall ist, könnte die Bildung einer Interphase zu hohen Energiekosten führen und daher energetisch ungünstig sein. Auf diese Weise bleibt das System in einem sehr fluktuierenden Steady-State. Da sich die thermodynamischen Parameter beider Zustände von denen der äußeren Bedingungen unterscheiden, erscheint eine thermodynamische Kraft namens Kritisches Schwingen, die das System zu einem Zustand der Instabilität führt, der von außen auferlegt wird und in dem es nicht bleiben kann. ● Die Forschung lässt vorauszusagen, dass dieses besondere Verhalten kleiner Systeme die Dynamik der Erzeugung, Speicherung und Umwandlung von Energie in Nanogeräte unterstützt, schließt Perez.
