
Es ist der neunte Planet des Sonnensystems, sein Name P5, ist der fünfte Mond, der um Pluto umkreist.
Dank der Bilder des Hubble-Weltraumteleskops wurde der fünfte Mond dieses eisigen Zwergplaneten entdeckt. Der neue Satellit, getauft von der Zeit als P5, hat unregelmäßige Form und eine Erweiterung von 10 bis 25 Kilometer.
Der Fund wurde von einem Team von Astronomen unter der Leitung von Mark Showalter vom SETI-Institut (Kalifornien, USA) durchgeführt. An der Studie nahmen auch Forscher des Southwest Research Institute und der Johns Hopkins University teil.
Der neue Mond, P5 genannt, hat eine unregelmäßige Form, eine Ausdehnung von etwa 10 bis 25 Kilometern und dreht sich in einer Umlaufbahn von einigen von 95.000 Kilometer, auf der gleichen Ebene wie die anderen Satelliten des winzigen Planeten. "Die Monde bilden eine Reihe von perfekt verschachtelten Umlaufbahnen, etwas wie russische Puppen," so Showalter in einer NASA-Erklärung.
Forscher sind überrascht, dass ein so kleines Objekt wie Pluto ein derart komplexes Satellitensystem hat. Nach der am häufigsten akzeptierten Theorie könnten ihre Monde die Überreste einer Kollision zwischen diesem Zwergplanet und einem anderen Objekt des Kuiper-Gürtels sein, das sich vor Milliarden von Jahren am Ende des Sonnensystems befindet.
New Horizons wird 2015 Pluto erreichen
Die Entdeckung des fünften Pluto-Satelliten ist wichtig, um einen sicheren Weg der New Horizons-Sonde zu definieren, die sich derzeit auf dem Weg zum kleinen Planeten befindet. Das Ziel soll 2015 erreicht werden. Diese Mission zielt darauf ab, zum ersten Mal detaillierte Bilder von Pluto und seinen Monden zu erhalten.
Dieses System ist so winzig, und es ist so weit weg, dass selbst ein Teleskop, das so leistungsstark ist wie das Hubble, nur einige kleine Details erfassen kann. Der Mond P5 wurde von einer der Teleskopkameras in mehreren Bildern entdeckt, die in den letzten Wochen Ende Juni und Anfang Juli gewonnen wurden, und wird als kleiner weißer Mota beobachtet.
P5 wird zu den anderen vier Pluto-Monds hinzugefügt. Charon ist die größte und erste, die 1978 entdeckt wurde. Im Jahr 2006 enthüllten die Bilder, die auch vom Hubble aufgenommen wurden, die Existenz von Nix und Hydra, und 2011 erschien der vierte Satellit, P4.
