
Australien hat beschlossen, Pionier im Schutz der Ozeane mit der Schaffung der weltweit größtes Meeresreservatnetz.
Der Umweltminister des Meereslandes, Tony Burke, hat angekündigt, daß dieser Schutzvorbehalt etwa eine Fläche von ca. 3,1 Millionen Quadratkilometer.
Im Jahr 2010 vereinbarte die zehnte Vertragsstaatenkonferenz des Übereinkommens über die biologische Vielfalt, die 2010 in Nagoya (Japan) stattfand, dass der 10 Prozent der weltweiten Meeresoberfläche bis 2020 geschützt werden sollte.
Ein Drittel der Gewässer des Landes wird geschützt
Dieser Vorschlag erweitert den Schutz der Riffe im Korallenmeer gegen Queensland und beschränkt damit die Nutzung von Gas und Öl im Bundesstaat Westaustralien, einer der reichsten dieser Art von Energieressourcen.
Diese Änderung erhöht die Anzahl der Reserven von 27 bis 60 bis zu einem Drittel der Gewässer des Landes und der Schutz von Tieren wie Blauwalen, grünen Schildkröten und anderen bedrohten Arten wie grauem Mutterhai und Dugong wird erweitert.
Die angekündigte Maßnahme wird nur wenige Tage von der Erdgipfel Rio+20, eröffnet die Möglichkeit, dass die Fischereiindustrie auch Entschädigungen in Höhe von rund 99,7 Millionen Dollar (79,2 Millionen Euro) fordern kann.
Der Plan muss noch vor seiner Umsetzung in Australien einer abschließenden Konsultation unterzogen werden.
