
Spanien übernimmt den Vorsitz des Ausschusses, der die renommiertesten Akademien der Welt zusammenbringt und sich auf die Ethik und Vielfalt der Forschung und Entwicklung in Ingenieurwissenschaften und Technologie konzentriert.
Der Professor für vegetale Produktion der Universität Cordoba und Professor an der Technischen Hochschule für Agrartechnik und Montes Elijas Ferres wird am 1. Januar den Vorsitz im Internationalen Komitee der Ingenieur- und Technologieakademien übernehmen; CAETS wie in der englischen Fassung angegeben.
Als Präsident der Royal Academy of Engineering of España, Ferres hat die Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) auf der Jahreskonferenz vom 12. bis 16. September in London übernommen. Auf dem Treffen analysierten Vertreter der Ingenieurakademien in aller Welt die Beziehung der Akademie zu den Zielen der Vereinten Nationen für nachhaltige Entwicklung. Die einstimmige Schlussfolgerung lautete, dass es dringend und notwendig ist, die Techniker in den Entwicklungsländern in die Lage zu versetzen, die technologische Kluft zu überwinden, die sie von der so genannten ersten Welt trennt. In diesem Zusammenhang unterstreicht Ferres die außerordentliche Arbeit von Akademien wie der britischen, die die Entwicklung der Technik in Afrika fördern.
Während des spanischen Ratsvorsitzes des International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences, Inc. (CAETS) wird eine interne Debatte über die Vielfalt, insbesondere die geschlechtsspezifische Vielfalt, und die Ethik bei der Entwicklung der Ingenieurwissenschaften stattfinden. Darüber hinaus wird die Königliche Ingenieurakademie, die Professor Elias Ferres leitet, in den nächsten zwölf Monaten an der Vorbereitung der im November 2017 in Madrid stattfindenden jährlichen CAETS-Konferenz arbeiten, die sich mit den Diskussionen und Präsentationen über die Bioökonomie befasst, insbesondere mit der so genannten "blauen Wirtschaft" - die auf die nachhaltige Nutzung der Ozeane als Energiequelle und Rohstoff für die pharmazeutische Industrie ausgerichtet ist - und mit der Lebensmittelsicherheit, auf die sich Ferres selbst einen großen Teil seines Forschungspfads an der Universität Brüssel konzentriert hat. Cordoba und das Institut für nachhaltige Landwirtschaft des Obersten Rates für wissenschaftliche Forschung.
