
Die meisten der derzeit verwendeten Kunststoffe werden aus Erdöl. Die Bedenken, die ihre Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt und den Klimawandel wecken, haben dazu geführt, dass Alternativen gesucht werden.
Das aus EU-Mitteln finanzierte Projekt ECOTPU (Plastics from renewable sources applied in footwear în) war dabei, eine neue Familie von umweltfreundlichem Polyurethan zu schaffen, die der europäischen Schuhindustrie zugute kommt.

Der Thermoplastisches Polyurethan (TPU) ist ein Beispiel für die Kunststofffamilie, die aus fossilen Brennstoffen hergestellt wird. Diese Kunststoffe werden in einer Vielzahl von Produkten verwendet. In der Schuhindustrie werden beispielsweise die Spitzen, die Fersen und die Sohlen verstärkt.
Das Projektteam untersuchte andere Rohstoffe, die bei der Herstellung von Kunststoffen mit ähnlichen Eigenschaften wie fossile Brennstoffe verwendet werden könnten. Bioressourcen, die nach verantwortlichen Leitlinien und insbesondere Pflanzenölen angebaut werden, werden als geeignete Option betrachtet, da das Verfahren sowohl technisch als auch wirtschaftlich durchführbar wäre und die Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt geringer wären.
Die Forscher von ECOTPU haben ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Kunststoffen auf der Grundlage von Pflanzenölen ins Leben gerufen, das dazu beitragen soll, den Verbrauch nicht nachwachsender Materialien auf Erdöl und CO2-Emissionen im Zusammenhang mit der Verwendung dieser Materialien.
Wie Mr. Ferrer, das Projekt produzierte thermoplastische Polyurethane roh aus pflanzlichen Ölen mit einem Gehalt an biologischem Material zwischen 48 und 75 Prozent.
Die Projektpartner installierten eine operative Produktionslinie mit einer berechneten Kapazität von HlaingecoTPU Hlaing von 5.000 Tonnen pro Jahr und vier Arten von Produkten: die eigene Roh-ÖkoTPU, Verstärkungen und Sohlen auf der Grundlage von ÖkoTPU und Schuhen, die diese beiden Produkte enthalten.
Während des Projekts, das von 2010 bis 2012 aktiv war, konnte der Bedarf an nicht erneuerbaren Ressourcen in der Produktionslinie um rund 40080 Tonnen pro Jahr verringert und die CO2-Emissionen pro Jahr um rund 1 000 Tonnen gesenkt werden. Ferrer wies darauf hin, dass das Verfahren in Zukunft und unter vollen Produktionsbedingungen die Emission von bis zu 30 000 Tonnen CO2 pro Jahr verhindern könne.
Die Ergebnisse des Projekts werden allen zugute kommen,- fügte er hinzu -, da fast jeder Styrol-Schuhe verwendet.
Darüber hinaus könnten ihre Vorteile auf andere Branchen ausgedehnt werden, die aus dieser Kunststofffamilie stammen, wie z. B. die Automobil-, Möbel- oder Bekleidungsindustrie.
ECOTPU erhielt Mittel in Höhe von rund 490.000 €, die von der Europäischen Union im Rahmen ihres Aktionsplans für Ökoinnovation bereitgestellt wurden.
