
Abengoa wurde von VERSANDUNG, eine in Illinois ansässige Einrichtung in Chicago, die sich der Entwicklung erneuerbarer Energien widmet, um eine Stromerzeugungsanlage aus der Vergasung von Siedlungsabfällen, in der Stadt Glendale in Arizona (USA). Das Projekt sieht den Bau und die anschließenden Betrieb und Wartung für 30 Jahre vor. Das Projekt wird eine Investition von etwa 110 MUS$ bedeuten.
Gemäß dem mit VIESTE Energy unterzeichneten Vertrag wird Abengoa den Design und Bau, sowie Betrieb und Instandhaltung für einen Zeitraum von 30 Jahren Abengoa wird keine Beteiligung an den errichteten Vermögenswerten übernehmen. Die Arbeiten werden etwa 20 Monate dauern, wobei etwa 50 direkte und indirekte Arbeitsplätze geschaffen werden.
Das Projekt sieht den Empfang, die Klassifizierung und das Recycling von bis zu 180.000 t festen Siedlungsabfällen (RSU) pro Jahr. Durch ein Vergasungsverfahren, das eine optimale Nutzung der SUR-Fraktionen ermöglicht, wird bis zu 350 t Gas pro Tag, die zur Erzeugung von 15 MW elektrische Energie.
Abengoa arbeitet seit Jahren an der Entwicklung einer Lösung, die gleichzeitig eine effiziente Verwaltung von SUV und eine nachhaltige Energiegewinnung ermöglicht. Die Abengoa-Technologie beschränkt sich nicht auf die Behandlung der organischen Fraktion der RSU, sondern ermöglicht auch die Nutzung der anderen Komponenten, sowohl der Recycling- als auch der nicht recycelbaren und anderer Kunststoffe, durch verschiedene Technologien zur Gewinnung von Biodiesel und die energetische Verwertung von Dampf und elektrischer Energie.
Vor kurzem hat das Unternehmen den Betrieb der ersten Demonstrationsanlage mit der "Waste to Biofuels"-Technologie (W2B) in Salamanca begonnen, die 25.000 Tonnen festen Siedlungsabfällen (RSU) verarbeiten kann, von denen bis zu 1,5 ML kraftstofftaugliches Bioethanol erhalten werden.
