Alle menschlichen Aktivitäten beeinflussen die Umwelt, aber es sind die Tätigkeiten der chemischen Industrie, die häufig als die schädlichsten bezeichnet werden. Dies liegt sowohl an seinem enormen Energieverbrauch als auch an der großen Menge an giftigen Abfällen, die er erzeugt.

Andererseits wird der erwartete Anstieg der Produktion von Chemikalien wiederum den wirtschaftlichen, ökologischen und regulatorischen Druck verstärken, den die weltweite Industrie bereits hat. Ein großer Teil des Problems liegt in der Verwendung von starken und gefährlichen Lösungsmitteln.

Das aus EU-Mitteln finanzierte Projekt AQUACHEM (Urlaub Transfer metal chemistry and catalysis in aqueous media în) wurde entwickelt, um gefährliche Lösungsmittel durch chemische Katalyseverfahren zu ersetzen, die mit wässrigen Mitteln kompatibel sind, und junge Forscher in dieser Hinsicht zu schulen.

Das Netz wird von der Nationaler Forschungsrat Italiens (Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche, CNR) ermöglicht es Wissenschaftlern, sowohl novelals auch erfahrene Wissenschaftler in mehreren der wichtigsten Laboratorien in Europa in Ländern wie Frankreich, Deutschland, Ungarn, Israel, Spanien und Großbritannien zu erforschen.

Die am Netz beteiligten Laboratorien haben ihre Ausbildungszentren für die Untersuchung und den Austausch von Wissen über eine breite Palette von Themen bereitgestellt, die von Analyse der Substrataktivierung und stöchiometrische Reaktivität bis physikalisch-chemische Untersuchungen auf Wechselwirkungen zwischen Komplexen und Lösungsmitteln und der Entwicklung oder Verbesserung der verfügbaren Analyseinstrumente.

Seine Ergebnisse führten zu mehr als 150 Artikeln veröffentlicht in kompromisslosen Zeitschriften und Kongreßakten sowie mehrere Bücher und Thesen. Das Projekt führte auch zu der Anmeldung von fünf Patenten.

Die Partner von AQUACHEM behaupteten, dass chemische Reaktionen in wässrigen Medien, in denen Wasser als Lösungsmittel verwendet wird, ein großes Interesse an einer umweltverträglichen chemischen Praxis wecken. Wasser ist sicher, harmlos, umweltfreundlich und außerdem preiswert, so dass seine wirtschaftliche Attraktivität in Sicht kommt.

Die Forscher des Netzwerks machten Fortschritte bei der Kenntnis wässriger chemischer Stoffe und trugen dazu bei, die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der europäischen Chemieindustrie zu verbessern, ihre Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt zu verringern und die Exposition des Menschen gegenüber potenziell schädlichen Stoffen zu vermeiden.

Das AQUACHEM-Netz erhielt rund 1,9 Mio. EUR an EU-Mitteln und wurde im Dezember 2007 abgeschlossen.
