
Die Stadtregierung des Ortes Austin im Bundesstaat Texas wird sich einem Programm für erneuerbare Energien anschließen, das es ihr ermöglicht, alle öffentlichen Gebäude der Stadt, von Bibliotheken bis zur Feuerwehr, voll mit Strom zu versorgen. Fast die gesamte Energie, die wir erhalten, wird von einem Windpark im Westen des Staates geliefert werden.
Im Jahr 2007 haben die Behörden von Austin einen Plan angenommen, mit dem die Stadt sich verpflichtete, bis 2012 in ihren Abhängigkeiten 100 Prozent erneuerbarer Energien zu verwenden. Schätzungen zufolge will die lokale Regierung ihre CO2-Emissionen von 269.000 Tonnen Kohlendioxid im Jahr 2007 auf 50.000 Tonnen im nächsten Jahr reduzieren.
Die Entscheidung ist bemerkenswert, wenn man bedenkt, dass die Gemeinde im vergangenen Jahr und sogar in den vergangenen Wochen weniger als 20% ihrer Energie aus erneuerbaren Quellen gekauft hat. Die Umstellung auf den gesamten Strom aus erneuerbaren Quellen in öffentlichen Gebäuden wird Kosten von rund 6,9 Millionen Dollar pro Jahr (5,1 Millionen Euro) bedeuten.
"Austin hat sich als weltweit führend im Umweltschutz erwiesen und die Reduzierung unserer Emissionen ist ein wesentlicher Teil dieser Rolle," sagte der Stadtratsmitglied Chris Riley,
Der Wandel bedeutet den Energietransfer von rund 300 Stadtbezirken, die im Rahmen des GreenChoice-Programms jährlich rund 280 Millionen Kilowattstunden verbrauchen, was insgesamt rund 360 Millionen Kwh pro Jahr aus erneuerbaren Energiequellen im Einklang mit dem Unternehmen Austin Energy und dem Klimaschutzprogramm der Stadt bedeuten wird. Austin wird somit die einzige große Stadt in dem Land, das 100% seines Stroms aus grünen Energiequellen kauft.
