08/02/2013 - Der Asteroid "2012 DA14" besucht uns

Am 15. Februar, einem Asteroiden, von dem wir sehr wenig wissen, wird er sich die Erde in einem Abstand von der Oberfläche von nur 28.000 km. Dieses Stück Raumgestein, von 50 Meter Durchmesser, wurde es 2012 von Amateur-Astronomen aus Spanien entdeckt, mit dem Sponsoring des Programms Space Situational Awareness (Erfahrung der Weltraumwelt) der ESA.

 

Wir haben nur wenige Daten über diesen alten Asteroiden. 2012 DA14Es stehen keine direkten Maßnahmen ihrer Größe zur Verfügung. Die Wissenschaftler schätzen, daß sie einen Durchmesser von 50 bis 80 Metern haben. Die Zusammensetzung ist unbekannt, und es wird davon ausgegangen, dass die Masse 130.000 Tonnen beträgt.

 

Es ist bekannt, dass es kurzfristig keine Auswirkungen auf die Erde haben wird.

 

"Ihr Orbit lässt sich mit NEOdyS, der europäischen Asteroidendatenbank, recht genau berechnen; diese Berechnungen zeigen, dass wir zumindest in diesem Jahrhundert die Möglichkeit einer recht sicheren Kollision mit der Erde ausschließen können," sagt Detlef Koschny, der für die Untersuchung von Objekten in der Nähe der Erde (NEOs) im SSA-Programmbüro, Space Situational Awareness, zuständig ist.

 

Am 15. Februar 2013 wird der Asteroid der Erde in diesem Jahrhundert am nächsten kommen: Er passiert sie in etwa 28.000 Kilometern Entfernung mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 7,8 Kilometern pro Sekunde.

 

"Das bedeutet, dass es sich in der geostationären Umlaufbahn befindet, in der sich zahlreiche Kommunikationssatelliten befinden," sagt Koschny. "Für diese Satelliten besteht jedoch keine Gefahr, da der Asteroid "von unten" kommt und nicht über den geostationären Gürtel geht."

 

Der Asteroid wird am nächsten Freitagnachmittag um 20:40 CET (19:40 UTC) seine maximale Annäherung haben. Obwohl er klein vor dem riesigen Sonnensystem ist, sollte er in Europa für jeden sichtbar sein, der ein paar Ferngläser benutzt und weiß, wo man hinsieht (siehe Einzelheiten unten).

 

 

Entdeckt von Amateuren

 

Der Asteroid wurde am 22. Februar 2012 von der Umfrage "Die Sagra Sky Survey (LSSS) " entdeckt, die das Programm SSA der ESA unterstützt. Das LSSS Observatorium befindet sich im Südosten Spaniens, in der Nähe von Granada, in einer Höhe von 1.700 Metern, an einem der dunkelsten und am wenigsten leuchtenden Orte in Kontinentaleuropa.

 

Die kleine Größe und die zuvor unbekannte Umlaufbahn 2012 DA14 machten ihre Lage erst möglich, nachdem sie die Erde ungefähr siebenmal so weit wie möglich überquert hatten, wie es der Planeten vom Mond entfernt war.

 

"Wenn dieses Objekt aus Eisen heraus und auf unseren Planeten abstürzt, könnte es einen Krater erzeugen, der etwa mit dem 1,5 Kilometer langen Krater in der Nähe von Flagstaff, Arizona vergleichbar ist," sagt Koschny. "Obwohl das nicht passieren wird."
