
Ein internationales Team von Forschern unter der Leitung von Oberster Rat für wissenschaftliche Forschung (CSIC) hat das Stoffwechselgleichgewicht des Arktis-Planktons analysiert und gezeigt, dass steigende Temperaturen die Region des Planeten in eine Quelle von Kohlendioxid verwandeln können (CO2).
Die Ergebnisse seiner Arbeit, gesammelt in zwei Artikel in der Zeitschrift veröffentlicht Biogeosciences, sie sind das Ergebnis einer Reihe von acht ozeanografischen Kampagnen zwischen 2007 und Juni 2012.
"Die Rolle des Arktis-Planktons als Sumpf oder CO-Emitter lösen2 In der Atmosphäre ist es von großer Bedeutung, die Rolle dieser Region des Planeten im Kohlenstoffgleichgewicht der Biosphäre zu bestimmen. Darüber hinaus hat er die Arbeit unter sehr harten Bedingungen, mit Kampagnen in der vollständigen arktischen Dunkelheit des Winters und bei Temperaturen unter - 40°C" gefordert, erklärt der Forscher des CSIC Carlos Duarte vom Mittelmeerinstitut für Fortgeschrittene Studien.
Stoffwechselstörungen
Nach dem ersten dieser Studien, wenn der dunkle arktische Winter zu Ende geht und die Eisschicht abnimmt, ist die Vermehrung von photosynthetischem Plankton im Frühjahr in der Lage, genügend organische Substanz zu produzieren, um die trophe Kette für den Rest des Jahres zu füttern. Auf diese Weise übt der Arktis-Gletscher Ozean jährlich als CO-Senke aus2.
Die zweite Studie kommt zu dem Schluss, dass die Erderwärmung dieses Gleichgewicht beeinträchtigen kann. Experimente auf den Svalbardinseln (Norwegen) bei 78°N zeigen, dass Plankton eine Quelle von Kohlendioxid in die Atmosphäre wird, wenn die Temperatur 5°C überschreitet. Schätzungen zufolge wird der europäische Arktis-Sektor in den kommenden Jahrzehnten diese Temperatur erreichen.
"Der Temperaturanstieg erhöht die Atmung des Planktons, wodurch die Atmung über Photosynthese und Plankton zu einem CO-Emitter wird.2 in die Atmosphäre. Darüber hinaus wird das Plankton in kleinere Formen umgewandelt, die leichter zu zersetzen sind," fügt die Forscherin der CSIC Johnna Holding hinzu.
