Viele Bakterien können Nanometrische Magnete Eisenoxid - Magnetit -, das verwendet wird, um sich im Magnetfeld der Erde zu orientieren, wie es ein Kompass tun würde. Diese magnetischen Nanopartikel oder Nanomagnete sind von großem Interesse fürdiagnostische und therapeutische Anwendungen, ob dies durch Überhitzung (Hyperthermie) geschieht, die Krebszellen bevorzugt über gesunde Zellen tötet, beispielsweise durch die Abgabe von Arzneimitteln an bestimmten Orten, ohne dass der gesamte Körper des Patienten mit potenziell gefährlichen Nebenwirkungen infiziert werden muss. Die magnetischen Partikel bakteriellen Ursprungs sind von hoher struktureller und chemischer Qualität und biokompatibel, da sie mit einer biologischen Membran beschichtet sind und somit ein "magnetosom" bilden.

 

Ein Team von Forschern aus BCMaterials (Basque Center for Materials, Applications and Nanostructures) und der Fakultät für Wissenschaft und Technologie der UPV/EHU, angeführt von Ma Luisa Fernandez-Gubiida und Alicia Muela, das Verfahren, das diese Bakterien zur Herstellung von magnetischen Eisenoxid-Nanopartikeln anwenden, geklärt hat. Die Studie wurde unter Bedingungen durchgeführt, unter denen die Bakterien perfekt kontrolliert werden, und hat die großen europäischen wissenschaftlichen Instrumente wie die Syncrotron Elettra in Triest (Italien) und die hochauflösende elektronische Mikroskopie im Labor für fortgeschrittene Mikroskopie in Saragossa eingesetzt, um die Prozesse der Bildung von Nanopartikeln zu verfolgen.

 

Die Schlussfolgerung der Arbeit ist, dass Bakterien zuerst Eisen ansammeln, das sie von außen in einem Protein erhalten, das als "Ferritin" bekannt ist, bis es einen bestimmten Schwellenwert erreicht. Von diesem Moment an wird Ferriteisen in Magnetit umgewandelt, wodurch die Eisenmenge in jedem Bakterium bis zur vollständigen Reifung der Magnetosomen erhöht wird. Die Vorläuferrolle von Ferritin ist für die Bildung von magnetischen Nanopartikeln von entscheidender Bedeutung und wurde durch zarte Experimente zur Absorption von Synchrotronstrahlung hervorgehoben.

 

Diese Ergebnisse öffnen die Tür für die Produktion von bakteriellen Nanopartikeln in großen Mengen durch Biotechnologiemethoden. Die Arbeit wurde in "ACS Nano" veröffentlicht, einer der besten Zeitschriften, die sich auf den Bereich Nanowissenschaften und Nanotechnologie beziehen.

Er ist derzeit an der Fakultät für Wissenschaft und Technologie tätig und wird in Zukunft im Wissenschaftspark Leioa im Campus de Bizkaia der UPV/EHU angesiedelt sein.
