
Die Forschungsgruppe Umwelttechnologien und industrielle Ressourcen der Polytechnische Universität Madrid (UPM) arbeitet daran, neue Techniken zu entwickeln, die in der Lage sind, Luftqualitätsprobleme in städtischen Umgebungen umfassend zu diagnostizieren und die Strategie für ihre Lösung zu bewerten. Die Arbeit ist Teil des Programms TECNAIRE-CM (Innovative Techniken zur Bewertung und Verbesserung der Luftqualität in der Stadt), an denen auch Forscher aus der Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Zentrum für Energie-, Umwelt- und Technologieforschung (CIEMAT) und Oberster Rat für wissenschaftliche Forschung (CSIC) zusammen mit einem Dutzend Partnerunternehmen und Technikern aus dem Bereich Luftqualität der Stadtverwaltung und der Gemeinschaft von Madrid.
Nach Angaben der Weltgesundheitsorganisation verursacht die Luftverschmutzung im Jahr 2012 über 3,7 Millionen vorzeitige Todesfälle, die meisten davon in städtischen Gebieten, wo sich sowohl die Bevölkerung als auch die Luftemissionen konzentrieren. Heute leben mehr als die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung in städtischen Gebieten, und dieser Anteil dürfte bis 2050 auf 70% steigen. Dieses rasche Wachstum wird zur Entwicklung neuer städtischer Gebiete führen, wodurch sich die Landnutzung verändert und die Energie- und Verkehrsnachfrage steigt, was die Luftqualität weiter verbessern kann.
Trotz der Anstrengungen, die in den letzten Jahren unternommen wurden, um die Emissionen zu senken, sind die gesetzlich festgelegten Konzentrationswerte (Richtlinie 2008/50/EG) in den wichtigsten städtischen Gebieten noch immer höher. Diese Überschreitungen betreffen vor allem Partikel und Stickstoffdioxid. Letzterer ist der am meisten problematische Schadstoff in Madrid. Im Jahr 2015 überstiegen 13 der 24 Luftüberwachungsstellen der Stadt Madrid den jährlichen Grenzwert für Stickstoffdioxid, der in der europäischen Richtlinie festgelegt wurde.
