
Forscher der Universität von Navarra (UPNA) und Institut für Agrobiotechnologie (IdAB) haben eine Studie mit genetisch veränderten Tabakpflanzen durchgeführt, aus denen die Erzeugung von Tabakerzeugnissen möglich ist. 20 bis 40 Prozent mehr Ethanol, wodurch ihre Rentabilität als Rohstoff für die Erzeugung von Biokraftstoffen erhöht wird.
Tabak, der in hoher Dichte angebaut wird und mehrmals im Zyklus geschnitten wird, kann zu einer Zunahme der Tabakproduktion führen. 160 Tonnen frisches Material je Hektar und zur idealen Quelle für Biomasse für die Erzeugung von Bioethanol werden. Jon Veramendi, Leiter der Forschungsgruppe Landwirtschaftliche Biotechnologie, erklärt: "Tabakpflanzen als Quelle von Biomasse zur Herstellung von Bioethanol könnten eine Alternative zum traditionellen Tabakanbau sein, der in den USA und in Europa zurückfällt, weil sie nicht mit Schwellenländern wie China konkurrieren können."
Im Verlauf der Untersuchung, die im Rahmen der Molecular Breeding, Tabakpflanzen der kommerziellen Sorten Virginia Gold und Havana angebaut wurden. Die Pflanzen wurden genetisch verändert, um ihre Stärke- und Zuckerproduktion zu erhöhen, was die Ethanolproduktion fördert. Diese Arbeit basiert auf der Doktorarbeit von Ruth Sanz Barrio, die letztes Jahr in der UPNA gelesen wurde. Die Forscher Imma Farrán, Jon Veramendi Alicia Fernández-San Millán, Maria Ancín und Luis Larraya nahmen an der Arbeit teil.
Wie Professor Veramendi erklärt, "ist das, was jetzt getan wurde, eine Feldarbeit mit diesen beiden Tabaksorten, und es wurde festgestellt, daß die Stärke und der Zucker tatsächlich im Tabakblatt zunehmen." Der traditionelle Tabakanbau lässt die Pflanze wachsen und die Blätter wachsen und größer werden, da Nikotin dann synthetisiert wird, wenn die Pflanze größer wird. Bei der Verwendung von Pflanzen zur Herstellung von Biokraftstoffen setzen die Forscher jedoch auf einen dichteren Anbau, ähnlich dem Anbau von Futterpflanzen: "Die Tabakpflanzen werden sehr nahe aneinander angepflanzt, während im gesamten Zyklus mehrere Ernten durchgeführt werden. Wenn die Pflanze etwa 50 Zentimeter hoch ist, wird sie abgeschnitten und in die Biomasseverarbeitungsanlage gebracht. So können im Laufe des Zyklus bis zu 160 Tonnen Material pro Hektar erreicht werden."
