La Europäische Weltraumorganisation (ESA) hat nun eine neue Vision von Merineris-Täler Dank der Daten, die während der 20 einzelnen Umlaufbahnen der Sonde erfasst wurden Mars Express.

 

Marinaris Valleys hat eine Erweiterung von mehr als 4.000 km lang und 200 km breit, und erreicht eine rasante Tiefe von 10 km10 mal länger und fünfmal tiefer als der Grand Canyon of Colorado, Das macht ihn zum größten Canyon unseres Sonnensystems.

 

Die Bildung dieser Kanone wird wahrscheinlich direkt mit der Verdickung von Tharsis, die außerhalb der Ebene liegt, links von diesem Bild. In dieser Region befindet sich Olympus Mons, der größte Vulkan im Sonnensystem.

 

La vulkanische Aktivität ist in der Natur der Felsen, die die Wände des Canyon und in den angrenzenden Ebenen, die Frucht von aufeinanderfolgenden Lavagießen.

 

Als die Region Tharsis in den ersten Milliarden Jahren des Planeten durch die Ansammlung von Lava anschwellend wurde, dehnte sich die umgebende Rinde aus, zerbrach und kollabierte und führte zu dem beeindruckenden System von Marinaris-Tals.

 

Die komplexen Fehlermuster sind auch das Ergebnis der gewaltigen Ausdehnungskräfte, denen die Region ausgesetzt war. Die neueste kann deutlich im zentralen Teil des Bildes und entlang seiner unteren Kante zu sehen.

 

Die Erdrutsche sind auch dafür verantwortlich, dass die Kanone heute aussieht, besonders in den nördlicheren Gräbern, wo man die jüngsten Einbrüche beobachten kann. Der obere Teil der Hänge wurde durch den Prozess der Massenentfernung verwässert.

 

Die Sonden in der Umlaufbahn zum Roten Planeten, Mars Express, haben unter ihnen mineralologische Informationen gesammelt, die darauf hindeuten, dass die Region vor Hunderten von Millionen Jahren von starken Wasserströmen umgebaut wurde, wodurch die Tiefe des Canyon erhöht wurde.
