
Feste Siedlungsabfälle, landwirtschaftliche Abfälle und Klärschlamm enthalten in großen Mengen wiederverwendbares Kohlenstoff.
Die Wiedergewinnung dieses Kohlenstoffs dient nicht nur der Umweltschutz, sondern ermöglicht es auch, ein wertvolles und nützliches Material für Herstellung von Materialien mit kommerziellem Wert, wie z. B. Polymere und Kunststoffe biologischen Ursprungs.
Das Projekt wurde daher ins Leben gerufen. SYNPOL (Biopolymers from syngas fermentation) finanziert aus dem Thema Lebensmittel, Landwirtschaft und Fischerei und Biotechnologie des Siebten Rahmenprogramms der Europäischen Union, auf dem eine Plattform für die Behandlung und das Recycling von Abfällen biologischen und chemischen Ursprungs und Rohstoffen in einem einzigen integrierten Prozess entwickelt wird.
Erzeugnisse, die aus der Gärung von Synthesegas (Syngas) aus Siedlungs-, Agrar- und Wasserabfällen werden zur Entwicklung neuer rentabler und kommerzieller Biopolymere eingesetzt.
„Zwei besonders wichtige Vorteile des Projekts SYNPOL sind zum einen, dass die für die Synthesegaserzeugung verwendeten Abfallmengen nicht mit der Lebensmittelwertschöpfungskette konkurrieren, wie es bei der Biodieselproduktion der Fall ist; zum anderen wird unser Endprodukt, der von Bakterien erzeugte Biokunststoff, sein 100 % biologisch abbaubarDr. Oliver Drzyzga, Projektleiter des Zentrums für biologische Forschung (CIB) Oberster Rat für wissenschaftliche Forschung (CSIC) von Spanien.
Das Team, das SYNPOL ist der Ansicht, daß die Anwendung dieser biotechnologischen Methode nicht nur der Umweltmanagement von Landabfällen zugute kommen wird, sondern daß auch Verringerung der Umweltschäden durch aus Erdöl gewonnene Kunststoffe. Schließlich wird SYNPOL die EU in die Lage versetzen, die weltweite Führungsrolle bei der Synthesegasfermentierungstechnologie für die Verwertung von Abfällen und die nachhaltige Produktion von Biopolymeren zu übernehmen.
Jedes Jahr werden sie entweder direkt in die Umwelt oder auf Deponien in der EU verbracht. 25 Millionen Tonnen Kunststoffe, die aus dem Markt genommen werden, was wegen ihrer Beständigkeit gegen Abbau enorme Umweltschäden verursacht“, berichtete Professor José Luis García López, Koordinator und Hauptforscher des Projekts. „Daher besteht ein dringender und zwingender Bedarf an alternativen Verfahren zur Entwicklung und Anwendung industrieller Biotechnologien, die Abfallmaterialien in nachhaltige und wirtschaftliche biologische Produkte wie neue Biopolymere umwandeln.“
