Die Fusion von Kernen bestimmter leichter Atome hat zur Folge, dass stabilere Kernebildung und damit die Freisetzung von Energie. Dieser Prozess ist die Grundlage für eine sichere, deutlich saubere und reichliche Energiequelle. Es ist jedoch nicht einfach, eine so hohe Anzahl von Fusionsreaktionen pro Einheit von Zeit und Volumen zu produzieren, dass die Kernfusion zur Grundlage künftiger Kraftwerke wird.

 

Das thermonukleare Fusionsprogramm durch magnetische Einschließung versucht dies zu erreichen, indem es den Brennstoff (Wasserstoffisotope) zu extremen Dichte- und Temperaturwerten in der Größenordnung von 100 Millionen Grad bringt. Unter diesen Bedingungen befindet sich die Materie in einem Zustand, der als Plasma bekannt ist, und verhält sich wie eine global neutrale Flüssigkeit, deren Bestandteile (atomische und Elektronenkerne) elektrisch geladen sind. Bei einer Temperatur von 100 Millionen Grad Kein materieller Behälter ist für das Plasma denkbar. Die Einschließung erfolgt durch geladene Partikel sind empfindlich auf Magnetfelder. Mit sehr intensiven Magnetfeldern in Form von Donuts (als Toroider, der formaler ist) kann man das Plasma so lange wie erforderlich halten.

 

Viele Hindernisse sind bei der Verfolgung dieser scheinbar einfachen Idee entstanden, und viele sind überwunden worden. Vielleicht waren es alle kritischen Hindernisse. Es gibt jedoch Phänomene, die die Einschließung immer noch sehr stark beeinträchtigen. Die wichtigste davon ist die Turbulenzen kleiner Größe oder Mikroturbulenz, die sich aufgrund elektromagnetischer Wechselwirkungen von Partikeln entwickelt, die Plasma bilden.

 

Eine gründliche Kenntnis der Mikroturbulenz in Plasmaen würde ihre Kontrolle ermöglichen, und dies hätte direkte Auswirkungen auf den Bau effizienterer Fusionsreaktoren. Dies ist das Ziel der Wissenschaftler, die vom 30. Juni bis 11. Juli in der ICESAT in Madrid zusammenkommen und sich an der Gyrokinetic Theory Working Group Meeting (die geeignete Theorie zur Beschreibung von Mikrotuberkulose in Plasma wird als Gyrokinetiktheorie, und daher der Name des Meetings). Die Organisatoren sind Ivan Calvo, das Nationale Fusionslabor, ICESAT, und Felix Parra von der Universität Oxford, die es geschafft haben, einen Großteil der internationalen Experten (vor allem Theoretiker, aber nicht nur) auf dem Gebiet zusammenzubringen.

 

Internationale Experten werden über die wichtigsten Aspekte diskutieren, die im Bereich der Fusion gelöst werden müssen, damit weitere Fortschritte erzielt werden können.
