
Die Theorie, dass der Planet durch zwei Episoden in denen er war komplett mit Eis und Schnee bedeckt hat in der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft Kontroversen hervorgerufen. Angesichts dieser Hypothese sind Wissenschaftler der Ansicht, dass dieses Phänomen nie passiert ist, weil es keine Anzeichen dafür gibt, wie sich der Planet von seinem Gefrierzustand erholt hat.

Der wissenschaftliche Widerstand gegen diese Theorie wurde von einem Team von Geophysikern der Universität von Chicago, die sich auf die Existenz der Wolken selbst stützen, denn wenn der vorhandene Schnee die Sonnenstrahlen widerspiegelte und die Erde diese Hitze nicht bewahrt hätte, wäre unser Planet immer eingefroren geblieben.
Wissenschaftler bestätigen ihre Hypothese mit einer Reihe von globalen Modellen für die allgemeine Zirkulation, wo sich zeigt, dass die Wolken einen Treibhauseffekt erzeugt haben, der mit dem globalen Gletscher endete. Andere Forschungen deuten darauf hin, dass für die Auftauung dieses Makros, das angeblich unseren Planeten bedeckte, eine Konzentration von ca. 20 Prozent an atmosphärischem Kohlendioxid erforderlich wäre, und Paläontologen haben bisher chemische Beweise dafür gefunden, dass die CO2-Werte in der Vergangenheit maximal 1 bis 10 Prozent erreichten.
Auf einem mit Eis bedeckten Planeten nehmen die Wolken die entscheidende Rolle bei der Erhitzung des Planeten ein. Die Wolken spielen eine grundlegende Rolle in unserem System, da sie Infrarotstrahlung in der Nähe der Erdoberfläche fangen, indem sie einerseits die Erwärmung des Planeten ermöglichen und außerdem das ankommende Sonnenlicht reflektieren.
Dank dieser durch Wolken verursachten Wirkung argumentieren Wissenschaftler der Universität von Chicago, dass die für das Ende der Eiszeit erforderliche Kohlendioxidkonzentration 10 bis 100mal kleiner als empfohlenbestätigt, dass diese extremen Kälteperioden passieren konnten, ohne dass der Planet vollständig eingefroren blieb.
