
Sümpfe mindern die Energie der Wellen und wirken als natürliche Barrieren gegen energiereiche Klimaphänomene. Daher kann die Wiederherstellung von derzeit besetzten Sümpfen eine kostengünstige Anpassungsstrategie sein, um den Auswirkungen der Erhöhung des Meeresspiegels entgegenzuwirken.
Dies ist eine der Schlussfolgerungen einer Untersuchung, die von der UPV/EHU, das in weniger als 10 Jahren die Zeit festlegt, die mehrere Sümpfe des östlichen Kantabriens brauchten, um sich zu regenerieren.
Sümpfe wiederherstellen
Unter dem derzeitigen Szenario der globalen Erwärmung und der Beschleunigung des Meeresaufstiegs "ist die Untersuchung der Sumpfgebiete von großem Interesse für die Entwicklung von Strategien zur Anpassung an die Folgen des Klimawandels in der Küstenregion," erklärt Ane García-Artola, Forscherin der Abteilung für Stratografie und Paläontologie der UPV/EHU, derzeit in einem postdoktoralen Aufenthalt an der Rutgers University (USA). Sie ist die erste Unterzeichnerin des Artikels Agricultural fingerprints in salt-marsh sediments and adaption to sea-level rise in the eastern Cantabrian coast (N. Spain), die das Magazin Stuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science veröffentlicht. An der Arbeit nahmen auch die Professoren der UPV/EHU Alejandro Cearreta und Maria Jesús Irabien sowie Forscher an der East Carolina University und der Autonomen Nationaluniversität Mexikos teil.
Im östlichen Kantabrien wurde ein Großteil dieser Küstenfeuchte seit dem 17. Jahrhundert für landwirtschaftliche Zwecke genutzt, insbesondere von der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis zu den 1950er Jahren, als der Rückgang der landwirtschaftlichen Tätigkeit begann. Der Mangel an Wartung der Deiche ermöglichte den Eingang von Wasser aus dem Ästuar, der in diese künstlich isolierten Gebiete eindrang, wodurch seine Regeneration und Wiederbesiedlung durch die halophile Vegetation gefördert wurde, d.h. in der Salzwelt.
In dieser Arbeit wurde der Prozess der Regeneration der Sümpfe in den Mündungen von Santoña, Plentzia und Urdaibai untersucht, ausgehend von der Variation in der Fülle der typischen Mikrofossilien des Sümpfens (foramine) und des Sandgehalts. "Der landwirtschaftliche Horizont konnte durch das fast vollständige Fehlen von Mikrophosilen identifiziert werden, deren Zahl während des Regenerationsprozesses gestiegen ist, bis er sehr groß war, nachdem das Sumpfgebiet bereits regeneriert war"%3
